Paper Emulsion
Coatings
Manufacturing Plant

Paper emulsion coating is a type of coating applied to paper to improve its performance and appearance. It is made from a dispersion of polymer particles in water. The polymer particles can be natural or synthetic, and they are typically acrylic, vinyl acetate, or polyurethane. The coating is applied to the paper using a variety of methods, including roll coating, blade coating, and spray coating. Coatings offer smoothness, gloss, brightness, and opacity to the base papers and provide them with enhanced printability, which requires resistance to ink splitting forces, smoothness, ink holdout and gloss, etc. The various applications of Paper Emulsion Coatings are:

  • Coated paperboard

  • Coated printing paper

  • Paper and board for food packaging

  • Coated speciality papers

  • Coated paper labels

  • Corrugated board

Market Size of Paper Emulsion Coating

In India, the Mayonnaise Market is of more than 800 crores in INR, and increasing at a rate of around 24% every year. The worldwide market is more than 1300 crores in USD, and increasing every year.

Ingredients used in Paper Emulsion Coating

  • Pigments:
The most common pigments used in paper emulsion coating are titanium dioxide, kaolin clay, and carbon black. Titanium dioxide is used to give the coating its whiteness and opacity. Kaolin clay is used to give the coating its smoothness and gloss. Carbon black is used to give the coating its black color.

  • Binders:
The most common binders used in paper emulsion coating are acrylic, vinyl acetate, and polyurethane. Acrylic binders are water-based and are easy to apply. Vinyl acetate binders are more durable than acrylic binders, but they are also more difficult to apply. Polyurethane binders are the most durable binders, but they are also the most expensive.

  • Additives:
The most common additives used in paper emulsion coating are defoamers, lubricants, and biocides. Defoamers are used to prevent the coating from foaming. Lubricants are used to make the coating easier to apply. Biocides are used to prevent the growth of mold.

High Shear & High Viscosity Mixing Technology
for Paper Emulsion Coating Manufacturing

High-shear mixers or high-shear homogenizers are used to produce standard mixtures of ingredients that do not naturally mix. This industrial machinery disperses, or transports, one phase or ingredient (liquid, solid, gas) into a main continuous phase (liquid), with which it would normally be immiscible. A rotor, together with a stationary component known as a stator, or an array of rotors and stators, is used in a mixing tank containing the solution to be mixed, and in a pipe through which the solution passes, to create shear. A high-shear homogenizer mixer is used to create emulsions, suspensions, lyosols (gas dispersed in liquid), and granular products. It is used in the food, pharmaceutical, adhesives, chemical, cosmetic, and plastics industries for emulsification, homogenization, particle size reduction, and dispersion.

Key design factors in the high shear mixers include the diameter of the rotor and its rotational speed, the distance between the rotor and the stator.

Paper Emulsion Coating Manufacturing Plant

United Group's Paper Coating Emulsion Plant uses the high shear and high viscosity mixing technology for production of agglomerate-free paper emulsion coatings for defect-free coating applications.

The pigment slurry passes through the rotor/stator workhead and is subjected to intense high shear. This high-shear mixing ensures that the product fed to the coating plant is agglomerate-free. In-Line mixers can be used to speed up the dispersion process and produce an agglomerate-free slurry in a fraction of the time. This technology minimizes the defects in paper coating process.
